Paradise
Creek Nature Park is the 40-acre
public access piece of a larger
project involving a total of 250
acres in public and private
restoration and conservation. The
nature park will be the 2nd largest
public park in Portsmouth, VA (not
counting ball fields in Churchland).
The park also will be the only place
open to the public where you can
see, touch and enjoy the restoration
of the Elizabeth River! With a river
that is such a busy commercial and
military harbor, this will provide a
rare opportunity.
When Phase 1 of the park opens in
December 2012 in a partnership with
the City of Portsmouth, you’ll be
able to hike two miles of trails
through mature forest and restored
native plants, and cross a 200’
footbridge at the mouth of 11 acres
of new wetlands, just restored by VA
Port Authority. You’ll also climb an
“Earthworks Sculpture” for a
sweeping view of the creek and
explore the history of the creek
restoration at interpretive signage
throughout the site.

The University of Virginia School of
Architecture – the same team that in
2009 designed our out-of-the-box
Learning Barge - is now designing
Phase 2 of Paradise Creek Nature
Park. Phase 2 will include education
pavilions, a canoe launch with
access roads, a children’s
playground and additional parking.
We’re still raising the last $2
million needed for this
one-of-a-kind park celebrating the
balance of industry and environment.
YOU can make this park a reality:
